For the second time around Robinson students participated in Vuelo de Ensueño. This is an activity to make cancer patients forget, even if just for one day, their harsh treatments. These patients are given the opportunity to fly around Puerto Rico on a jet with their friends. When they arrive at the hangar, they get more surprises!
Our chaplain and our Institutional Advancement Office helps coordinate the pre-production of this activity with Tradewind and Aerostar. “We help find donors, services, and we give our students an unforgettable experience, the chance to create a relationship with this patients. One of the pillars of Robinosn School is service. It’s important our students get this experiences to find leadership, tolerance, and compassion” says ours Institutional Advancement director Anya Belaval.
A couple of days before the “vuelo” took place, students went to the hospital and took snacks to the patients as they continued building their friendship. Every couple of weeks, Robinson students goes to see a movie with the patients, they then share anecdotes and the thoughts regarding the movie.
On the day of the event students that are about the same age of the patients are assigned buddies. They play throughout the whole day with their buddies. While patients are up in the air, Robinson students decorate the whole hangar to transform it into a Magical Christmas theme and surprise the patients when they step out of the plane. Our students dress up as elves and give them gifts. At the end of the activity the patients are able to enjoy clowns, magicians, and characters such as Santa Claus and the Three Wise Men.
