This Middle School program, sponsored by our Student Government Association, pairs upper classmen to serve as mentors to middle school students. Each mentor serves as an example of what Robinson School expects from its students.
What is the value of peer mentoring programs?
Peer mentoring offers a wide range of benefits to both the mentor and their students. Peer mentors provide assistance in a number of areas that include the following:
Helping student resolve issues related to academics
Assisting students in thinking through decisions and taking on the appropriate amount of responsibility
Working with their mentee to identify when adults should be involved in the resolution of an issue
Communicating with younger students in a language they understand
Motivating middle school students to perform at a high level
Working with students to engage them in extra-curricular activities
How does the Eye to Eye Program work?
At the beginning of seventh grade, students are assigned an upper classmen as their mentor. Students engage in a wide variety of programs to get to know one another. These team building activities benefit the middle school student and allow the Upper School students to practice the leadership skills that they have acquired during their journey at Robinson School.
During the year, all mentors meet with their mentees at least once a week during snack or lunch time to check in and be sure that the student is given all the help he or she may need. Together they form a relationship that often lasts much longer than the duration of the program. This program truly embodies the spirit of Robinson School and exemplifies our commitment to youth, community and service.
