- Why should I choose Robinson School?

1. What is the general profile of the school? ( Top ) We are nationally accredited, coed school for children from Pre-Pre Kinder (Age 3) to 12th grade. Robinson is affiliated with the Methodist church. Our college prep curriculum is taught in English and follows the US national standards for excellence. Advanced placement classes and programs for students with minor learning disabilities are available. Read more about our programs in the School Life section.
2. What is the current enrollment? ( Top ) Our enrollment is typically 600 students, with approximately 90 students in Bright Beginnings Preschool, 250 elementary students, 100 Middle School Students and 160 Upper School Students.
3. How many openings are there for a typical school year? ( Top ) Pre Pre Kinder: 20 Pre Kinder: 10 Kindergarten: 10 First: 25 Second to Sixth: 8 Seventh to Eighth: 10 Ninth to Eleventh: 5 Twelfth: 2
4. How are the admission pieces "weighed"? ( Top ) For Elementary School, the student´s visit day at Robinson School, psychological testing, and a report from the current school are of equal weight. For Middle and Upper School, all four pieces of the application are important (transcript, recommendations, standardized testing, student visit). The strength of the transcript is of primary importance, closely followed by the recommendations and testing. The student visit enables us to more fully round out the academic information.
5. How important are extracurricular activities? ( Top) An academic "fit" between the student and Robinson is the most important aspect in the Admissions process. Beyond that, we look for a match in student’s interests and programs that we offer as electives and after school. Outside interests or activities are not factors considered for Elementary School applicants.
6. What does Robinson look for in an applicant? ( Top ) For all grade levels, academic fit is the most important. A willingness to participate in a variety of activities is also important. Many of our applicants are qualified to meet with success at Robinson but admission is very competitive and we receive more applications than there are spaces available. Our goal is to admit students with skills and abilities that will help create a talented class with diverse interests and backgrounds. In addition, thorough background checks done on each applicant to ensure that they are drug free and demonstrate honesty, integrity and teamwork in their school and personal lives.
7. Does Robinson favor siblings and/or children of alumni in admission? ( Top ) We do take note of children who are siblings and/or children of alumni. In a situation where there is one space in a grade and two equally qualified applicants, the offer would likely go to the child who had a family connection to Robinson. However, it must be noted that not every child in a family may do well at Robinson. There are times when, though very painful for both a family and the school, admission is denied for the benefit of the child. Finally, there are situations where even all qualified "connected" children cannot be offered admission because of lack of space in a grade. We cannot offer admission solely to siblings or alumni children; new families must be given consideration as well. All Robison families, at one time or another, were themselves "new" families.
8. How expensive is the tuition? ( Top) Our tuition ranges from $6,000 to $11,000 depending upon the grade level and program in which your child is enrolled. In addition, we strive to keep all fees and incidental expenses to a minimum. For example, if we attend a field trip, the cost to parents is minimal. We will work with families to develop a payment plan for tuition. To assist you in planning, we have outlined the standard admission and enrollment costs in our Tuition section.
9. What is Robinson’s average class size? What is the Student-Teacher ratio? ( Top ) The maximum class size is 22 students, but we hardly ever reach that size. The average student-faculty ratio is approximately 20:1.
10. What are the class hours? ( Top ) The preschool program begins at 8:00 and ends at 2:00. All other classes begin promptly at 7:30. Dismissal time for Elementary School is 2:45 and Middle and Upper School at 3:00.
11. What kind of colleges do the students attend after Robinson? ( Top ) The simple answer to this question is that our students attend whatever college they choose. We work individually with students to match their post secondary program with their talents and aspirations. Therefore, our students may choose to attend schools like Columbia or may opt for the Art Institute, the Conservatory of Music or the University of Puerto Rico. We do offer comprehensive college planning assistance. More information on College Counseling is available here.
12. What happens if my child is not Methodist? ( Top ) An important part of the Methodist religion and a key component to our program is that we are very inclusive. We celebrate the diversity of community members in a wide variety of ways and religion is among them. Our teaching revolves around being a “good person” and is acceptable to all religions. Elementary students learn lessons on friendship, integrity and honesty. In the upper grades, students have an opportunity to compare a variety of Christian and non Christian religions. We support students in observing their high holy days and look forward to them sharing their perspectives with us. 16. Are students required to wear uniforms? ( Top ) All Robinson School students are required to wear uniforms. However, we offer a great deal of flexibility in the uniform the child chooses to wear. 17. What activities can parents become involved in? ( Top ) We highly encourage the participation of all of our parents, and there is a lot to do at school! For example, you can join our Readers series and read to our preschool and elementary students. Parents participate in our Speakers series and talk about topics of interest to them. Our Parents´ Association is very active and continually seeks assistance in planning and implementing a number of programs. For more information about how to become involved at Robinson, visit our Parents section.
18. What happens if I want to enroll my child at a time other than the beginning of the school year? ( Top ) At Robinson, we engage in something called "rolling enrollment", and we are one of the few schools on the island to offer this alternative to parents. At any time during the school year, we will admit new students. We have such a supportive and positive school climate that new students acclimate easily and happily no matter when they arrive. Please talk with us about an enrollment schedule that will fit your needs.
19. My child does not speak English OR Spanish. Can we still consider Robinson School as an option? ( Top ) Absolutely! We have students who came to us only speaking Russian, Chinese, French or German. We will work with you to build an ESL program that is appropriate to your child´s needs. Please note, however, that our programs will not be effective if your child has a learning disability in addition to ESL needs.
20. Are there scholarships? ( Top ) There is a very limited amount of financial aid available for current families. Please note: all financial awards are need-based and a thorough financial analysis of family income is performed.
