Studies show that children who read throughout the summer maintain their literacy skills at a higher level than those children who do not read. Our summer reading program encourages children not only to maintain their skills, but actually improve them. This work allows students to enter school in August ready to master new material and eliminates the need to review important skills.
We believe there should never be a vacation from learning, especially for the young, whose minds are well-suited for the absorption of information and gaining an understanding of its use. Instead of seeing summer as an escape from the classroom, children should be encouraged to view it as an opportunity for a different kind of learning experience that will continue to enrich their lives and bring an added dimension to their vacation experience.
Summer Reading Tips
Our summer reading books were chosen because they are books students really like. They are engaging pieces of literature that will help students learn how much fun it is to engage in leisure time reading. Here are some tips to help make your child´s experience with the summer reading program even more positive:
Establish a regular time for reading for all members of the family.
Show genuine interest in the stories or books your child discovers during the summer.
Appreciate all books the child selects, even the ones that look "too easy."
Read to your child.
Read yourself!
Provide lots of fun reading material besides the required book. Kids love fun magazines and puzzle books.
