Upper School Curriculum

Robinson School offers a balanced liberal-arts program with depth in every discipline. The faculty work within two frameworks to design their curricula. These are the grade level and the department, addressing both horizontal and vertical needs in the program. Curriculum Supervisors and Department Chairs work closely with teachers to coordinate and implement a cohesive course of study.

Although we offer a traditional program, there is a good deal of flexibility to meet individual student’s needs within that framework. While each department offers many options, our progarm is designed to ensure that students can not only process information, but also be open-minded, creative, big-picture thinkers.   In addition to the basic academic subjects, we offer our students additional courses such as Drama, Art, Music, Technology, and Physical Education.  After school enrichment, tutoring and sports programs round out the educational program.

Upon completion of Secondary School, students are well prepared to attend the college of their choice.

Math Department
At the secondary level, students explore the concepts of ratio and proportions, percents, integers, geometry and algebra. Mathematics instruction is broad and provides not merely a theoretical approach, but encompasses real life applications.

Language Arts Department
Through all levels of Language Arts education at Robinson School, we seek to improve students’ skills in reading critically, listening discerningly, writing analytically and speaking clearly.  Further, students may elect to take the Advanced Placement English class, which provides the ultimate challenge for them.

Science Department
At the Upper School level, science courses become more specialized and intensive.  Concepts and skills mastered in earlier grades are built upon and applied in Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses.  To develop scientific literacy and processing skills, students are required to submit a variety research papers.  In the Advanced Placement courses, students are asked to apply specific research methods using specialized technology.

Social Studies Department
The goal of the Social Studies faculty is to develop well-informed citizens capable of participating in social and political decisions.  Students also further develop and refine their skills through the study of Geography, History, Sociology, and Economics, and have the opportunity to apply social studies concepts, skills, and values.

Spanish Department
Students are placed in Spanish classes based on proficiency level. Non native speakers take classes that mirror those offered in the States. We call this track Spanish as a Second Language (SPSL). Native speakers´ curriculum reflects the same standards as the Language Arts curriculum. Literature, grammar, vocabulary, analytical thinking, and writing are emphasized.
