Nydia M. Barrios
Position: Educational Therapist
Universities & Degrees: MA Psychology; Universidad Interamericana
BA Science of Education: St. Thomas College
Nydia began her career at Robinson School 18 years ago. Before joining us, she directed a program in New Jersey that coordinated services for addicts and the homeless in need. She moved to Puerto Rico just as Robinson was beginning its Educational Therapy Program – she was the perfect fit.
Mrs. Barrios is an integral part of the educational program at Robinson. She provides one-on-one support to our students, working to identify the origins of each child’s difficulties and measures their progress in those areas throughout the year. “We try to strengthen their brain, fine motor, visual motor, and perception skills. We also work to strengthen Language, Math, concentration, and attention span.”
“I launched the program, identified the correct evaluations that we would offer, and made the link with companies that helped us,” Mrs. Barrios shared about the program’s origins. She is now joined by a team of educational therapists at Robinson, all of whom “offer this service for all our students to make sure each one is getting their best learning experience.”
Robinson’s Pathways Program identifies the needs of the students, based on their multiple types of intelligence and each student’s individual way of learning. “Oftentimes a student will have trouble with concentration or attention and for that student, we offer manipulative, auditory, and visual ways of learning. We find out what type of learner each student is and personalize. We also offer services for students whose first language is not English. We evaluate them and help with vocabulary, grammar, and phonetics.”
Robinson focuses on developing the whole child. Nydia says that what sets us apart the most from other schools is that we influence the cognitive, analytic and spiritual area for our students. We make sure everyone at Robinson has the support and tools they need to reach success.
Nydia is a mother of two and a new grandmother! She told us she is very dedicated to her daughters and that she teaches bible study and supports teachers in her Church.
