Our Student Government Association (SGA) is working hard towards the growth of their H2O 4 PR Campaign – a fundraising activity created to buy water purification systems for at least 500 families. After creating an online campaign and getting the support from Sawyer Products to double the number of filters purchased, Pelham Middle School, an IB School in New York, decided to also support our SGA’s Campaign.
They reached out and organized a Skype reunion with Robinson’s SGA. Our students used this opportunity to create awareness, not only of the water issue in Puerto Rico but also about the hurricane impact on our wildlife, the lack of electricity, the migration of more than 150,000 Puerto Ricans, unemployment and the new way of life. Our students explained how they are dealing with the crisis at home and pointed out that not everyone is doing as fine as they are. The Puerto Rico Metropolitan area is definitely harder to live in than before, but it’s nothing compared to the present condition of our rural areas. The SGA talked to the Pelham Middle School students about how our School Chapel was transformed into a Collection and Distribution Center. They shared stories about visiting different towns to clean up debris, bring food, water and other essential goods. They also spoke about how they coordinated educational forums and medical services for the people of these towns. The SGA is organizing many activities to raise money to buy water filters, like the Brisca Tournament and the Penny Wars.
It’s activities like these that create awareness about the situation in Puerto Rico. Our students are not only spreading the word but doing everything they can to help. We create world leaders and global citizens.
A big “THANKS” to Pelham Middle School for helping our H2O 4 PR Campaign and for their interest in Puerto Rico’s situation!
