This past Saturday, 12 schools and 225 students from all over Puerto Rico came together at Robinson to represent their schools as part of the United Nations Student Congress of Puerto Rico (MUN) – an authentic simulation of the UN multilateral body which introduces students to the world of diplomacy, negotiation and decision making. We are very proud of all of our student delegates to the Model United Nations! Robinson Delegations won three awards: 1st and 3rd place for the referendum for Catalonia’s independence (Jean Blakeman, Sofia Dana, Anastacia Diaz, and Sofia Sanchez) and 4th place for addressing lifestyle considerations in liver transplants (Víctor Aguilar and José Colón). Way to go!
The Model UN was born at Syracuse University in 1927 as a way to provide a diverse group of informed students and their faculty advisors a forum for addressing global concerns in a real-world context. As members of MUN, students take on the roles of delegates and extensively research the country, organization or world leader that they represent. Using this background knowledge, student delegates debate a given topic with the aim of using their negotiation, communication and diplomacy skills to develop a resolution for approval by the committee. The MUN further provides students with the opportunity to develop writing skills, as well as critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership.
“Quite a few of today’s leaders in law, government, business, and the arts participated in Model UN during their academic careers – from U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to Chelsea Clinton and actor Samuel L. Jackson” Source: National Model United Nations. As a leading international and IB World School, Robinson continues to create opportunities for our students to participate in these types of events and organizations as they work to develop into world leaders and global citizens.
