Free Teacher Compost Workshop!
Puerto Rico Composta is creating an event catered exclusively for teachers interest in creating a compost proyect for their schools.
Here are some of the education benefits of having a compost-based garden, explained by one of own teachers, Jessica Hartman:
•When students take part in a hands-on composting program, they can make connections to themes taught in reading, science, social studies and math. There are many books that the students already read/can read about the process
•Students learn to take an active role in learn how to become responsible consumers by thinking about what happens to the waste they produce. They learn that through composting they can reduce the waste in a landfill and at the same time produce something that is very useful to the plants.
•A compost pile provides hours of fun digging and discovering organisms that make up an ecosystem and food webs
•A compost pile is an excellent tool that encourages students to explore the natural world through their senses and make lasting connections to natural processes
•Provides excellent opportunities for students to design their own experiment where they can practice writing, observational, and math skills.
•The compost pile can become an outreach program that encourages the community to participate in.
