The “Raíces y Acción: Contruyendo Comunidad” educational theater program is led by its artistic and educational director Tere Martínez. The purpose is to motivate Puerto Rican youth to become leaders of their communities while developing academic skills. It consists of a series of workshops taught in the classroom, where theater and acting will be used as the main teaching tools to create active learning.
This year, three top schools of the Island will participate:
• Venus Gardens High School (San Juan)
• Robinson School (Condado)
• Ruth Evelyn Cruz Vocational School (Cidra)
The program consists of two phases:
Phase 1: Four workshops and reflections on the theme of identity and post-traumatic stress. Students will develop an action plan based on their reflections.
Phase 2: Four workshops on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in Robinson and Venus Gardens to write a play in collaboration with volunteer students from the three participating schools.
Once the workshops are finished, they will present two readings of the final theater piece:
• November 20, 10:00 – 11:30 am at Robinson School
• November 21, 9:00 – 10:30 am at Venus Gardens High School
