Class of ‘76 alum Carlos Dávila Rinaldi’s work as a painter and sculptor has been recognized internationally. He believes his “work has evolved in an ongoing personal battle between abstraction and figuration.” Carlos is a painter, sculptor, a draftsman and graphic designer.
Carlos’ work is influenced by Pop Art and neo-Dadaism and frequently uses current events, popular culture and humor as inspiration for his pieces. His artwork is often filled with messages, puns and references to mass media as well as references to social issues relevant to Puerto Rico. His pieces are fresh and direct colorful abstractions as well as figurative work referencing the island’s current issues.
Carlos began his studies at the Arts Students League in San Juan while he was a student at Robinson. He was later awarded an apprenticeship at the Robert Stackhouse and Louis Lieberman Apprentice Program and earned his bachelor’s degree from DePauw University in Indiana. Carlos has received numerous awards and distinctions and his work has been exhibited locally and internationally as well as included in major private and public collections including the Museo de Arte de PR (MAPR), the Ponce Museum and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de PR (MAC).
